Ace Hotel Pittsburgh
Ace Hotel Pittsburgh is a hip boutique hotel set in a former YMCA which stood empty for decades. The hotel's design preserved many elements from the century old building, including some of the original wainscoting and terrazzo floors. The old three-story gym, with its running track and restored mural, has been converted into a mixed-use event space. Other features include the 1920s ballroom with its checkered floor and the ironwork stairwell, which has been turned into a gallery space.
The hotel is located in East Liberty, once the city's booming retail center in the first half of the last century. A second downtown where many of the industrialists who built the country, including Henry Clay Frick, kept homes. Now it is home to small tech start-ups, a growing crop of local galleries, microbreweries and other creative incubators.
Rooms feature locally produced furniture with room facilities including air conditioning, a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, a minibar, and a safe. Room service.
The hotel's restaurant, Whitfield, is by Brent Young, a Pittsburgher who made his name at the nose-to-tail Brooklyn butchery Meat Hook, and who is making good use of local livestock from some of western Pennsylvania’s best producers.
