Check-inn: Hotel Modez, Arnhem

Arnhem is a city in the eastern part of The Netherlands and capital of the Gelderland province. This pretty city is located on the banks of the Rhine and its hilly terrain is unusual for The Netherlands, as is its trolleybus system. The city is home to ArtEZ Institute of the Arts, most famous for its fashion academy whose students are someway putting Arnhem on the map as fashion capital of The Netherlands. This is where Hotel Modez comes in: created by fashion illlustrator Piet Paris and rooms decorated by 30 fashion designers who either studied at ArtEZ or have a studio in the city.

WOW Hotels: Speicher7, Mannheim

Winner of the European Hotel Design Awards 2013 for Architecture of the Year: conversion of an existing non hotel building to hotel use. The judges said "this was an excellent, thought provoking conversion of an old warehouse to a hotel, which has retained the soul and individuality of the original building. Preservation of the structure and its architectural detailing has been fundamental in its success, meaning that the hotel is integrated into its neighbourhood while also bringing a new social highlight to a formerly neglected area".

review: Hotel The Dylan Amsterdam
